Baking Traditions from Around the World: Jack & Beyond Christmas Edition

A Sweet Journey Through Global Festive Treats

At Jack & Beyond, Christmas isn’t just a season — it’s a celebration of warmth, family, and (of course) delicious baking.
From buttery mince pies in London to fragrant gingerbread in Germany, every culture has its own special way of making the holidays sweeter.

Join us as we explore some of the most beloved Christmas baking traditions from around the world — and maybe find a little inspiration for your festive table this year.

1. United Kingdom – Mince Pies and Christmas Pudding

Let’s start close to home! In Britain, no Christmas is complete without a warm mince pie. These buttery pastries filled with spiced fruit have been a festive staple since the 13th century. Traditionally, it’s considered lucky to eat one mince pie each of the twelve days of Christmas!

Then there’s the iconic Christmas pudding, rich with dried fruit, brandy, and spices — often steamed for hours and served flaming with a sprig of holly. At Jack & Beyond, we carry on this tradition with our own twist on mince pies: handmade with love in our Battersea bakery and available for nationwide delivery.

2. Germany – Stollen and Lebkuchen

In Germany, Christmas markets come alive with the scent of Stollen, a fruit-studded loaf dusted with icing sugar that symbolises baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes. Another favourite is Lebkuchen, a type of soft gingerbread often shaped into hearts and beautifully decorated — the perfect edible ornament!

3. Italy – Panettone and Pandoro

Italy’s festive tables are never without Panettone, the tall, fluffy bread filled with candied fruit and raisins. Originating from Milan, it’s now enjoyed worldwide, often served with mascarpone cream or a dusting of icing sugar. Its golden cousin, Pandoro, offers a lighter, buttery alternative — best enjoyed with hot chocolate on a chilly December night.

4. France – Bûche de Noël (Yule Log Cake)

The French Bûche de Noël, or Yule Log Cake, is both a dessert and a work of art. Made from rolled sponge cake filled with buttercream or chocolate ganache and decorated to look like a log, it’s a delicious nod to the old tradition of burning a Yule log for good luck.
At Jack & Beyond, we are offering our own version of this classic French treat, as a regular sized log for London delivery, or a mini version which can be shipped UK wide.

5. USA – Gingerbread Houses and Christmas Cookies

Across the Atlantic, Christmas is all about creativity in the kitchen. Gingerbread houses are built and decorated with colourful icing and sweets, while sugar cookies in festive shapes fill every home with the smell of vanilla and cinnamon. Baking together has become an American family tradition as sweet as the cookies themselves. Our festive hand-iced Gingerbread cookies reflect this tradition in the most delicious way.

6. Spain – Turrón and Polvorones

Spain’s festive tables gleam with Turrón, a nougat made with almonds and honey Another classic is Polvorones, crumbly shortbread biscuits that melt in your mouth — perfect with a cup of coffee after a Christmas feast.

7. Sweden – Lussekatter (Saffron Buns)

Swedes celebrate Saint Lucia’s Day in December with Lussekatter, golden saffron buns shaped like an “S” and decorated with raisins. These soft, fragrant pastries are a symbol of light during the darkest time of year — and pair perfectly with mulled wine.

8. Mexico – Rosca de Reyes

Although technically enjoyed on January 6th for Epiphany, Rosca de Reyes is a colourful sweet bread topped with dried fruit and sometimes filled with cream or chocolate. A tiny baby Jesus figurine is hidden inside — whoever finds it must host the next celebration!

9. Australia – Pavlova

Down under, Christmas falls in summertime, so Australians swap heavy puddings for Pavlova — a light meringue dessert topped with whipped cream and fresh fruit. Its crisp shell and soft centre make it a refreshing festive favourite (and one we love recreating at Jack & Beyond!).

10. Hungary – Bejgli (Poppy Seed Roll)

In Hungary, Bejgli reigns supreme. This rolled pastry, filled with sweet poppy seed or walnut paste, is a Christmas staple that symbolises wealth and prosperity for the new year. The intricate swirls inside make it as beautiful as it is delicious.
